Mallory Park Warm Up Race
Ben Willshire starts the 2009 season on a high at Mallory Park on 22nd March.
The meeting was a championship round for one of the other classes (125 masters challenge) but the team used the event as a shake down before the British Championship begins in May at Anglesey.
In Qualifying Ben Willshire was 5th quickest overall from a grid compiled of 250 cc, 210cc and other 125 Superkart's. Only 4 250cc karts were in front with several other 250's behind and Ben set a time 0.4 seconds quicker than the remaining 125 drivers.
Race 1 - Ben elected to start in P8 (the back of the 125cc masters class) to ensure he didn't interfere with the race for points at the front of the grid. Ben made a slow get away from the line with Lee Smith getting the jump on him into Gerrards but by the end of lap 1 Willshire had made back the ground and was soon on the tail of the 125 pack ahead. Some sensible race craft and clean overtaking saw Ben come home in second overall (1st in 125 Open and 2nd including 250's). The team then worked on making some set up changes to his Superkart to ensure he could improve on his lap times.
Race 2 - At the start Ben again elected to start at the back of the 125 grid despite being eligible for a front row start. This time Ben made a cleaner start, and was amongst the 125 Pack, having some very close battles through the field. Ben soon settled into his race and found himself breaking free of the pack, coming home in 6th overall on the road and the 1st 125 Open kart across the line.
RG Racing used the race as a test session for the British championship meeting scheduled at Mallory later this season - allowing them to take away some valuable data whilst taking the overall Win. We'd like to thank Phil Featherstone from PFP tuning for his hard work in preparing the kart for the opening race this season.
The team would also like to welcome System Store Solutions (Fami) to the Team. System Store Solutions are based in the south of England and supply and fit storage cabinets / solutions for a variety of uses.
